Bellydance Class Descriptions

  • Beginner: For those with very little or no previous experience in Oriental dance. Beginners will learn proper posture and stance, and basic technique of movements while being introduced to the beauty of Arabic music and the flow and style of Oriental dance.
  • Intermediate: For students who have mastered the basic skills and techniques learned after a few sessions in beginner level. Explore additional movements and combinations by following the teacher. Veil, finger cymbals and stick skills will be introduced and developed as well as style variations. A routine may be taught in addition to students developing their improvisational dancing.
  • Advanced: For students who are seeking additional challenge to further their dance skills and continue their mastery of finger cymbals (sagat), veil, and stick (assaya) as well as various different styles (raks sharki, folkloric, classic, pop, drum solo), improvisation and learning choreography. Students should expect to complete several session of intermediate before moving to advanced. Please discuss with Jehane to find the right level for you.
  • Dance FUNdamentals: a class specially developed by Jehane which focuses on abilities required by dancers of any level to raise their level of skill, fitness, and grace. Movement practices and information taken from Yoga, Ballet, Oriental Dance, Folk Dances, Popular Dances, Fitness Training, and Theatre are used to increase a dancer’s; flexibility, body precision, timing, mind-body coordination, spatial awareness, muscle strength, endurance, and more.
  • Basic Introduction to Bellydance: for those who have never taken a class and want to try it out before signing up for a whole session. Introduction to the music, movement vocabulary, posture and some fun combinations (3-4 hours)
  • Isolations and Layering : techniques, exercises, and combinations to improve isolation movements and layering of mulitple Bellydance moves. (3-4 hours)
  • Introduction to Finger Cymbals: Learn the basic techniques for playing finger cymbals. Choosing and wearing finger cymbals, sound variations, introductory rhythms, when to play and when to not play, playing while dancing, and take-home exercises will be taught.
  • More Finger Cymbals: For those who are comfortable with the basics and want to take their playing while dancing to the next level. More complex rhythms, embellishments, choosing professional quality cymbals, and take-home exercises will be taught.
  • Bellydance Balancing Props: techniques for improving balancing skill, purpose and context of different Bellydance balancing props and appropriate music pairing. Applicable to candelabra (shamedan), tea tray (senayya), sword (saif), cane (assaya) or any other prop you may want to put on your head to really wow your audience.
  • Bellydance Party, a performance-workshop combo: Available for all-female or a mixed-gender crowd (no all-male crowds, sorry), the Bellydance Party is a fun idea for girl’s night, birthdays, bachelorette parties or team-building. Options can include a short performance of 10-15 minutes followed by a dance lesson, or just a dance lesson on its own.
